To design a conducive learning environment for community leaders that accommodates different modes of learning via play, discussion, collaboration, reflection and experimentation. To design common spaces for people from different backgrounds to interact and interconnect ideas as they pass through before continuing on their respective different pathways.

Site analysis

Location: 70 South Buona Vista Rd

Target Users: PA staff & community leaders 

Main issues of site:

  • Distinct separation of activities â€‹

    • Cause a lack of communal interaction

  • Rigid, linear pathway as primary circulation

    • Restricts freedom in movement 

    • Lack of interaction in circulation

  • Closed off from nature 

    • Lack of interaction with surrounding greenery

Research 

As the space is meant for training community leaders, research was done on what makes an effective learning environment, and how to ensure there is space for different learning pedagogies and flexible, collaborative learning.

Spatial design

Variety & dynamism in movement between spaces

- Play with permeability of partitions

Degrees of flexibility 

- Allow freedom of users to define own internal borders & spaces
- Replace solid, distinct borders of spaces with different movable, customizable partitions

Blend borders of inside-outside

- Encourage interaction with nature
- Pulling nature in VS nudging people out

  • To express a playful, inviting, modern space

  • Use of bright wood tones match the greenery, allows the colours to pop out in contrast

  • White also acts as a plain backdrop, a canvas in which users are to express and build on their creative ideas

Dining hall

The dining hall is the featured area of the space. It acts as a central gathering space that encourages casual interaction and exchange of ideas between all users who pass through it.​ The seating positions, ceiling design and skylight all help to draw focus and circulation to the centre point. 

Reflection & discussion

  • Requires certain degree of privacy

  • Greenery helps to create a conducive, calm, inviting environment

  • Opportunity to blend indoor-outdoor in these nooks

Play

  • External connection between level 1 and level 2

  • Outdoor gathering space

  • Promotes physical activity and fun 

  • Provide areas for resting and socialising

  • Inner area has a smaller, cozier feeling for more intimate conversations or activities

Collaboration

  • Movable partitions allows different configurations and usage of spaces

  • Freedom to create own borders for impromptu group activities 

  • Learning spaces can combine into large area, or separate into more focused spaces

  • Different layouts respond to different learning modalities
